{still standing} baby bump highlights

& here we are!  It is time for me to say good-bye for a bit.  Although I haven't been blogging much during my pregnancy, I have been working hard behind the scenes to make a three month (give or take) break possible.  Now I am 38 weeks pregnant & exactly two weeks away from my July 11 due date.  I grow more & more excited, as well as more & more nervous, with each passing day.  Most of all, I can't wait to meet our little guy & be his mama.

I'll leave you with a few highlights of my very blessed, very easy pregnancy . . .

Here is my first official baby bump photo!  I was about 24 weeks pregnant & loving our babymoon at Newport Beach.  Our babymoon was absolutely amazing.  Just imagine five relaxing days spent enjoying the beach & the pool, not to mention amazing meals at great restaurants.

Here is a sweet moment captured on Mother's Day, one of the first beautiful weekends of Spring.  I was about 31 weeks pregnant & stealing a quiet moment in the sun.  I was so happy to be spending Mother's Day with my baby bump & my fur baby.  All of us love soaking up the sunshine!

Last but not least, here are my hubs & I posing shortly before my baby shower began.  I was about 34 weeks pregnant & I was really glowing that day.  Let me tell you, my Mom & my sister hosted the most perfect, most adorable baby shower ever the backyard of my childhood home on a gorgeous day.  I will forever cherish the lovely memories of celebrating Baby Boy Koru with our family & friends.

What a journey.  & to think this adventure is only beginning!

& that's a wrap, my friends!  Enjoy the long, lazy days of your Summer.  Let's meet back here in the Fall, shall we?

{still standing} dream come true

I have been wanting & hoping & wishing & praying to write a post like this for what seems like forever . . .

I am so happy & excited to announce my husband & I are expecting a baby boy in July!  Words cannot even describe how over the moon we are about Baby Boy Koru.  It's a dream come true, & I count my lucky stars every day.

As most of you know, my journey towards parenthood has been long, winding & trying.  I last spoke of this journey about one year ago & I've been pretty mum since.  My silence wasn't because there was nothing to say.  Quite the contrary!  There was so much to say I could hardly put my experiences into a coherent post.  I hope to write about it someday, to remember the journey & to help others who may be experiencing something similar.  For now, all I can say is every step, every stumble & every fall was worth it.

It's not lost on me that this particular adventure is just beginning.  I won't breathe easy until Baby Boy Koru is safe, happy & healthy in my arms.  But my worries are merely a footnote in this journey.  I am truly enjoying every moment of my pregnancy, basking in its glory & wonder.

What does this mean for Koru Wedding?  In a complete leap of faith last summer, I decided not to accept any 2014 weddings.  It didn't seem fair to compromise the time, attention & passion I devote to Koru clients & weddings because I was either hugely pregnant or juggling a newborn.  Thankfully, my decision was the right one since Baby Boy Koru will be here soon!  I will consider 2015 weddings on a case-by-case basis & I hope to be fully back in the wedding game by 2016.

As for Koru Wedding Style, I will do my best.  I'm sure most of you have noticed I have had trouble blogging & visiting other blogs regularly since the summer.  Now you know I had good reason!  From here on out, I will blog when inspiration strikes.  Hopefully, that will be fairly often!  No promises.

Koru Wedding is based upon the inspiration & celebration of new beginnings.  To me, that's always meant weddings.  Now I've expanded my horizons to realize Baby Boy Koru is a new beginning for my family, one that deserves my complete & full attention.  & so it goes!

Thank you for sharing in my exciting news!

{Thanksgiving 2013} forever thankful

Every year since we got married, I've dedicated my Thanksgiving post to my husband.  & this year shall be no different!  My husband is my family, my world, my love & my best friend.  I am so thankful for everything he is, everything he does & everything he will be.

It's always such a treat to look through our wedding photos to pick one for this post.  The fun task reminds me of where everything started, how far we've come & what lies ahead of us.  Maybe it hasn't always been the easiest journey but it's our story & it's a story of love & hope.  Because I don't think I could possibly say it any better & the words still ring true two years later, here is a rerun of my thankful 2011 post:

Thankful.  Very, very thankful.

My husband RZ is at the tippy top of my gratitude list this Thanksgiving.  I dedicate this post to him.
I am thankful to call you my husband.  I am thankful for the beautiful moment we clasped hands, looked into each other's eyes & pledged our vows in front of our nearest & dearest during our marriage ceremony.  I am thankful for the fun, rockstar party that followed.  I am thankful for our sunny, dreamy Hawaiian honeymoon.  I am thankful for the incredible, lovely newlywed times that came after our wedding & honeymoon.  & for the times that were not so happy or easy, I am thankful we weathered the storms together.  I am thankful for our sweet home we share with our sweet pup.  I am thankful that I look forward to the moment you walk through the door every night.  I am thankful for every big & small moment that we make special.  I am thankful for this amazing life that is ours.

More than words.

second.

Two years ago on January 15, 2011, we got married!

I was head over heels in love with my husband the day I married him.  If you told me on my wedding day that I would say what I am about to say, I wouldn't have thought it would be possible.  But it is.  It's possible & real & true & beautiful.  I love him now more than ever!

Happy Second Anniversary to my amazing husband!  This is only the beginning!! xo

{Holidays 2012} still thankful

2012 has been a difficult year as my husband & I have struggled to expand our baby family.  Now that Thanksgiving is near & I'm taking stock of the blessings in my life, I look back on the tough times with gratitude & hope.  I am so very grateful for family, old friends, new friends, blog friends & even complete strangers who reached out to give me support & prayers.  It means the world to me!

Most of all, I am thankful for my husband.  RZ is as heartbroken as me, yet he somehow manages to walk beside me, keep me strong & make me believe our dreams will come true.  Because I don't think I could possibly say it any better & the words ring true one year later, here is a rerun of my thankful 2011 post:

{Mrs. Monday} Holidays 2012

With Thanksgiving just days away & Christmas right around the corner, I have the holidays on my mind.  It's not all blissful thoughts of love, family & laughter with a nice amount of holiday cookies & cupcakes mixed in.  No, before we can get to the celebration of the holidays, we must face the nitty-gritty logistics of where we are celebrating the holidays

Every couple we know has a different approach.  Some host the holidays.  Some spend Thanksgiving with her family, Christmas with his family.  Some split each holiday between her family & his family.  Some spend the holidays with their friends.  There a million different scenarios & the magic trick is finding the one that works best for your baby family.

After years of experimenting, we may have found the perfect solution for us!  RZ & I are following the same formula as last year: Thanksgiving with his family, Christmas Eve with his family & Christmas with my family.  In reality, we consider both our family- I say my family & his family just to for explanation purposes.  This holiday formula worked last year with us spending quality time with all of our loved ones while keeping the travel & stress to a minimum.  Now once we have kids, I'm not so sure the current plan will work anymore but we will cross that bridge when we must.  We will enjoy it while we can!

How do you navigate the holidays?

home very sweet home

Downtown Hoboken on our Wedding Day
One week & one day (but who's counting?) after we were displaced due to Hurricane Sandy, my husband & I came home last night.  It felt so good, so right, so sweet to be home again.  Hoboken, we missed you so much.  If there was a way to wrap my arms tight around our home & give it a big kiss, I would.

Hoboken means the world to us not only because it is our home, also it is the backdrop to our love story.  My husband & I met in Hoboken, dated in Hoboken, tied the knot in Hoboken, live in Hoboken & hope to start our family in Hoboken.  Not to mention that my business, Koru Wedding, was started in Hoboken.  The streets of this town tell our stories & hold our memories.

Right now, our beloved little town is still hurting so we hurt too.  There has been remarkable recovery in the past almost two weeks since Hurricane Sandy but there is much, much more to be done.  Fellow Hobokenites can't come home because their home & their belongings were lost to the flood waters.  Many of our favorite businesses remain shuttered because they were severely damaged & ruined.   I walk around the neighborhood that is familiar yet different.  I see the sadness & I feel the hope.

& this is a familiar scene all across our area.  Staten Island, Breezy Point & Jersey shore towns to name a few.  RZ & I have pledged to do what we can to bring Hoboken & other areas back better than ever.  We will shop, dine & volunteer local & we know many others who have the exact same plan.  We are Hoboken Strong AND Jersey Strong!

{Mrs. Monday} Lazy Girl's Halloween

* Due to a little miss Hurricane Sandy headed our way, I am writing all posts in advance this week.  My thoughts & prayers are with everyone in her path.  May you be safe & well!

No Fall is complete without our annual trip to Wightman's Farm.  This year, the trip came on a cool, cloudy Sunday in early October.  The leaves were just starting to change, the crispness was just beginning to tinge the air &, as always, there were plenty of plump pumpkins, fresh apple cider and homemade donuts.  & boy, did we indulge in the Fall treats!

A gallon of apple cider for me, a gallon of apple cider for RZ.  Six donuts for me, six donuts for RZ.  One pumpkin for me, one pumpkin for RZ.  Hey, fair is fair!  The delicious donuts & yummy apple cider only lasted about one week but our pumpkins sat & patiently waited for the day when I would decorate them for Halloween.

With Halloween fast approaching, that day came last week- time to decorate our pumpkins & send our Halloween cards.  I was feeling a bit lazy, to put it mildly.

I went with a minimalist look for our Halloween cards to spread some "season's creepings" to our family & friends across the miles:

Then I turned my attention to my pumpkins- two orange pumpkins from the farm & two white pumpkins recently acquired after my white pumpkin obsession.  Once again, it was just me, pumpkins & a black Sharpie.  While one little white pumpkin got away with going naked, I went with fun swirls, polka dots & stripes for the others:

Less you think the polka dot pumpkin is suffering from a disease, that is actually one metallic silver polka dot.  All in all, not too bad for a lazy girl's Halloween!

Seasons creeping to you!

Happy Birthday, RZ!

Today is a very special day: it's my husband's birthday!  Cue the confetti!!  Since we're away from home on his big day, I surprised him with this festive birthday balloon when he got home from work yesterday before we went out for his pre-birthday dinner.  Then at midnight, I whipped out an ice cream cake & candles for his "Happy Birthday" serenade.  I hope his birthday wish comes true because he deserves all that & more.  I just love celebrating with him!

To my best friend, my love & my husband: Happy Birthday! xoxo

{Still Standing} 7 Months

On the first Tuesday of each month, I link up with The Journey at Still Standing Magazine to discuss where I am on my journey towards motherhood after a devastating miscarriage in February.  I hesitated to post today because I didn't want September's posts to start on anything less than a positive note.  But here I am because I committed to sharing my story & it was the best decision I made.  It started a discussion that helped heal me & maybe helped heal others.  There is no stopping now.

Last weekend marked two major things: the unofficial end of summer & the due date of our baby.  We had the choice to celebrate the life we have or mourn the life we thought we would have before my first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage.  In the end, we chose a celebration.

The weekend was filled with a few of our very favorite things.  My husband, our sweet pup & I headed to the beach.  Our days included beautiful sunshine, lovely beaches, belly laughs, delicious food, good drinks & even better company.  In the midst of our celebration, our baby's due date passed on a day of sun mixed with clouds.  It added just a bit of sadness to our weekend, like the rain the sunshine needs to make a glorious rainbow.  Our rainbow is bright & vivid & strong; it's a true representation of our life.

Farewell, Summer & Welcome, Autumn.  May you bring a huge blessing of a rainbow baby into our life!

{Mrs. Monday} Family Matters

My husband & I got married one year & seven months ago.  Sometimes it seems like just yesterday.  Yet, very sadly, we have said good-bye to two of our guests in that short time.  Just three months later, we lost our dear family friend, Esther.  She is forever missed for her welcoming nature & her out-of-this-world cooking.  Esther's eggplant parmesan was simply the best.  Then, just about two weeks ago, we lost my Uncle Paul.  He was a great man who seemed to effortlessly excel at his many roles in life- husband, dad, handyman, cook, actor, Marine, etc.  I will always remember his long-winded stories, usually accompanied by my Aunt Tami urging him to get to the point, & his helpful driveway traffic control to guide us out of their steep driveway without running over their mailbox.  We miss both of them so very much.  I wish Esther & Uncle Paul were still with us but how lucky were we to have them celebrating our wedding with us?

At times like these when our memories are everything, I realize our posed wedding photos are oh so important.  The candid photos of Esther & Uncle Paul are precious too but there is just something really special about a good family photo.  Here's my side of the family including Uncle Paul- we're together, we're dressed up, we're happy.  I'll be honest- posing for the family photos was not the most exciting part of our wedding.  It's not easy to gather & arrange large groups of people, yet alone get them to look at the camera & smile at the same time.  A solid plan, good photographer & skilled wedding planner definitely help!  When it's all said & done, we are lucky enough to have a beautiful photo of our beautiful family on our beautiful wedding day to grace the pages of our wedding album, the walls of our home & the heart of our memories.  One moment in time captured & treasured forever.

The family photo session may take a bit of time away from dancing & celebrating on your wedding day but it is well worth it, my friends.

My Uncle Paul (in the blue tie above) & Esther (not pictured) may not be with us today but they live forever in our hearts.

Still Standing {5 Months}

On the first Tuesday of each month, I link up with The Journey at Still Standing Magazine to discuss where I am on my journey towards motherhood after a devastating miscarriage in February.

Yesterday was my birthday, a day of celebration.  There were smiles & candles & frosting & wishes!  & I celebrate, for there is much to be thankful for in my beautiful, imperfect life.  I have hope & love in my heart.  I have big dreams that maybe, just maybe, our dreams of expanding our family will come true this year.  It's possible, anything is possible!

I can only guess as to how close or how far I am from having a baby & becoming a mom.

Until my birthday wish to have a baby comes true, I continue to wait.  It seems like I have been waiting forever & I have no idea how much longer I will have to wait.  I can't help but feel the chorus of "The Waiting" by Tom Petty is my theme song on my journey:

"The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you get one more yard
You take it on faith, you take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part
"

Waiting.  Still waiting.

{Anniversary Session} Christina & Dylan

If this pretty, sentimental First Wedding Anniversary session doesn't tug at your heart strings, I don't know what will.

When Christina & Dylan got married, they couldn't fit a photographer into their wedding budget.  Their first wedding anniversary gave them the perfect chance to document their vintage style & playful relationship.  Enter the great Lauren of Lauren D. Rogers Photography & the rest is beautiful history.

The Staunton, Virginia train station not only provided vintage charm, it had deeply rooted meaning in the couple's relationship.  Christina & Dylan's love story began when Christina kindly offered to pick up a fellow college student's brother, Dylan, from the train station.  Sparks flew!!!  Soon, Christina & Dylan were logging in many hours at the train station as they traveled back & forth to see each other.  Now it holds an extra special place in their hearts as the location of their first wedding anniversary session!

I can feel & see the genuine love between Christina & Dylan in every single photo.  Honestly, I got a little sad thinking about this great couple having no professional photos of their wedding day.  But the more & more I look at these anniversary photos, the more I realize they have everything they need right here- a real & true documentation of their love story.

Happy First Anniversary, Christina & Dylan!  Cheers to many, many more!

Still Standing {4 Months}

Tomorrow, June 6, marks exactly four months since my first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage at 10 weeks.

I am linking up with The Journey at Still Standing Magazine, an online magazine dedicated to embracing life after loss & infertility.  On the first Tuesday of each month, women like me are encouraged to share where they are in their journey of grief or where they are in their journey towards motherhood.  As I have been struggling with how or when to tell my story here, this gave me the perfect opening to start the discussion.

On February 6, my miscarriage is the devastating end to our hopes & dreams of expanding our family.

Four months later . . .

I wake up & I count my blessings.  I may not be six months pregnant but I am blessed.  My husband is strong & true.  Our pup is silly & sweet.  Our home is warm & comforting.  Our family & friends are the best.  As if all this weren't enough, I have my health, my happiness, my hope.

I'm out of bed & ready to start my day.  Small victories.

I head outside to take Bailey on his first walk.  We live in a small, pedestrian-friendly city full of young families.  On the average walk, we pass no less than 10 moms pushing their babies in strollers.  I say "God Bless" to myself at the sight of each & every one to stave off the sadness.  It works.

So far, so good.  Three cheers for me.

I slowly approach our condo building as Bailey's walk comes to an end.  I may go inside, ride the elevator & make it to our condo without seeing another soul.  Or I may run into a neighbor Mom with her cute baby & be subjected to cooing over the baby's latest & greatest.  Oh, please, please spare me chatting with our next-door neighbor who is due one week before our baby would have been born.  My chances are 50/50.

Breathe.  The day is going so well!  God bless.

I settle at my computer for a day's work once I'm safely home.  I am so thankful for my job as a wedding planner & wedding blogger.  There is little talk of babies in the wedding world.  There are no co-workers to chat about their babies.  I get happily lost in love & flowers & lace.

Keep that momentum going.  Go, go, go!

I take a small break before lunch to peek at my favorite blogs.  Another blogger is expecting?  God bless.  Another blogger is recapping her baby bump photos?  God bless.  I check People magazine online for my latest dose of Hollywood gossip.  Another celebrity is pregnant?  God bless.  Another celebrity has chosen a funky name for their baby?  God bless.

By lunch, my heart is exhausted.

& so it goes.  The reminders of what could have been are everywhere, no matter where I go or where I look.  Every moment of every day is a conscious decision to choose hope over heartache.  It's gotten easier, almost effortless.  Still, it remains a real effort from the moment I open my eyes to face the day until I close my eyes to dream of better days.

Because, in my heart of hearts, I believe there will be better days.  I pray & I wish & I hope that my husband & I will have our rainbow baby.  I read somewhere that it's all about the right soul at the right time.  Please let our right soul & our right time come soon.  Very, very soon.

Say A Little Prayer

Today, I ask you for a favor from the bottom of my heart.

My high school friend Stacie is on the brink of saying good-bye to her brave husband Basil who has been battling brain cancer since 2006.  Stacie & Basil have continued to live a full life of true love & tremendous courage in the face of cancer.  They have inspired many, including me.  Basil has fought too long & too hard- it is time for his angel wings.  Here is Stacie's latest update:

"I laid in his arms all night. My exhaustion led me to a deep sleep. I felt his breathing and thanked God for his breath, his love for me and our children. I thanked God for his life. With out this gift I would be without my two most amazing blessings. He is still fighting as expected ... But things are labored. It's getting much harder. God is wanting him. My love for this man is infinite. His love for you all will be felt from above I promise you this. Today I will continue to honor Basil. He is a survivor, a warrior and an awesome awesome soul. I love you Basil."

Such love & heartbreak in her words!!  When my heart was breaking into a million pieces last February, Stacie was one of the first people to reach out & say "I am here for you."   I will never forget her kindness.  If at all possible, I would like to return the favor.

Whatever you may believe, I ask you to please keep this beautiful family in your thoughts, sending them peace, comfort & grace.  They will feel the extra support & love.  Say a little prayer, wish upon a shining star or throw a new penny into a fountain for them.  Thank you & may you & your loved ones always have peace, comfort & grace.

Update: Basil received his angel wings at 3:35pm today.  Please continue to pray for the new angel & those he now guards from heaven: his wife Stacie, his young sons Evan & Shane & his family & friends.

Steel Magnolias

Raise your hand if you love the movie Steel Magnolias.  Is your hand raised?  Mine too.

Now raise your hand if you agree that dear Shelby, she of blush & bashful pink wedding fame, would approve of this precious pink wedding cake decorated with gum paste magnolias!  Is your hand raised again?  Mine too.

I couldn't help but think of Steel Magnolias when I spied the magnolia cake above.  Steel Magnolias is one of my favorite movies, one that grows better & better with age.  I appreciate the idea of women as beautiful, delicate beings who are strong, resilient creatures when needed.  I see more & more examples of steel magnolias as my women friends, family members & I experience heartbreak & tragedy.  It never breaks our beauty or spirit, only makes us shine brighter & better.  Steel magnolias are everywhere!

Come to think of it, isn't that the perfect description of marriage?  A beautiful, delicate partnership that is strong & resilient when the going gets tough.

P.S. The pink magnolia cake is much better than the armadillo cake :-)

{Mrs. Monday} Home

Today marks the debut of Mrs. Monday, a little series dedicated to my thoughts & observations on my marriage.  I plan to post Mrs. Monday about twice a month, bring back Koru Kate Finds (remember?) one Monday a month & take a break one Monday a month.  Sound like a good plan?  Good, I thought you might like it.  Let's get this Mrs. Monday party started!

A few months ago, I stumbled upon a twist on "Home Is Where The Heart Is" that said instead "Home Is Where Your Husband Is."  You could replace husband with wife, partner, family or whatever pleases you.  I thought it was cute then I promptly forgot about it.

Until my husband left on a business trip to India for three weeks.

I knew I would miss my husband greatly but I grossly underestimated how much I would miss him.  We're not an attached-at-the-hip couple.  We have our own interests & our own friends so we're often in two different directions.  Still, with very few exceptions, we eat dinner & walk our dog together every night.  It's our time to connect, to share the joys & frustrations of our days.  I didn't realize how much I looked forward to this every day.  Suddenly, life was not the same when he wasn't walking through the front door each night.

Trust me, I was grateful to be home with all its comforts & familiarity whereas he was navigating a foreign country alone.  I had Beagle Bailey to keep me company, I had all my belongings at my fingertips & I could sleep in my comfy bed each night.  Family & friends were just a phone call away.  Nothing was the same though.  An emptiness permeated every moment & every moment seemed to last forever.

When my husband finally came back, it clicked.  Home is where my husband is right by my side!

perfectly

When it comes to wise words on weddings, I don't think there is much that can top this advice:

TRUTH!

Please keep this quote in your head & heart on your wedding day.  Because the details are really just details.  Brush off the little things like the peonies being the wrong shade of pink & the limo arriving late.  None of it matters.

Marry the love of your life.  Celebrate with your new spouse, family & friends.  & that, my friends, is wedding perfection!

inside

It's well established that I love checking out the cool & unusual modes of transportation that Brides & Grooms choose for their weddings.  In my quest for fun photographs of Brides & Grooms posing with their getaway cars, something else has caught my eye: Brides & Grooms inside their getaway cars.  Check this out & see if you agree these photos are something special.

Let's start with my favorite casual, relaxed photo of RZ & I riding in our beloved vintage taxi after our marriage ceremony.  The detail I love the most is one only RZ & I would notice: RZ is playing with his wedding ring, slipping it on & off his ring finger.  It's something he did throughout that ride from our ceremony to our reception & it's one of my first memories of our marriage:

This hip couple looks classically cool in their classic car:

A quiet moment between a Bride & Groom inside their vintage car is captured so perfectly that I feel like we're peeping Toms:

Another vintage taxi, another happy couple:

Why not take charge & jump in the driver's seat of your vintage getaway car?

Pretty cool, am I right?!  Your thoughts?

P.S. The Wedding Wheels of April is coming your way next week!

about last night

Did you enjoy Valentine's Day?  Was it full of yummy sweets & pretty flowers & mushy sentiments?  Or perhaps a quiet night with a simple "I love you!"  Whatever your fancy, I sincerely wish that you cherished every moment of love this Valentine's Day.  Mine was quite lovely.

There were beautiful red roses from my Valentine:

Then there was a delicious dinner at our favorite restaurant in New York City.  We went wild with an abundance of food: appetizers, entrees, sides & dessert galore.  This was a celebration!

Last but not least, there was a heart-shaped photo montage of our 5 amazing years together displayed in our main hallway:

The fun display touched my husband's heart just as I'd hoped.  The photos range from the silly to the serious & from the big to small moments.  We really needed a visual reminder of our blessed love story this year.  Because in good time & in bad times, we have each other.  We have it all.
